How early to arrive at Seattle airport: 2 hours, or 3 for international
Arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight at SEA and 3 before an international one. Add time for the drive, the check-in line, security and your concourse.

Give yourself at least two hours at SEA before a domestic departure, or three before an international one. That’s the Port of Seattle’s guidance. Start the clock when you reach the airport, not when you join the security line.
What changes your number
Your airline’s check-in cutoff, the security line, the walk or train ride to your concourse and the trip to the airport all move the number. The sections below take them in that order.
Check the airline cutoff before you set off
The Port directs you to your airline for flight check-in and baggage rules. Your airline’s check-in cutoff matters most if you need to drop a bag or see an agent.
Find its counter in our airline directory. Most airline check-in is on the Main Terminal’s ticketing level, Level 5. Alaska also has bag drops on Level 4 by Skybridges 5 and 6.
For AMC (Air Mobility Command) duty passengers on travel orders, the counters next to Checkpoint 2 open six hours before departure.
Leave room for the security line
More than one-third of SEA’s daily passengers arrive before 9 a.m., according to the Port. It also identifies busy periods from 2 to 5 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m. During peak hours, though, the Port says checkpoint waits can reach 45 to 60 minutes. Check the Port’s live checkpoint wait times before you leave.
The Port’s live page lists Checkpoints 1 through 6, though it says five are available. Any main checkpoint leads to every gate. The Port’s Pathfinder team in green shirts can direct you to the fastest line, and the Port says that, surprisingly, the longer lines can be the quickest. Checkpoints 1, 2 and 3 are closest to the A and S gates. Checkpoint 4 is closest to the Central Terminal and B and C gates. Checkpoints 5 and 6 are closest to the C, D and N gates.
| Checkpoint | Listed hours | Screening on the Port’s live page |
|---|---|---|
| 1, baggage claim level by south-end Doors 6 and 4 on the lower Arrivals drive | 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. | General, CLEAR+ |
| 2 | 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. | General, TSA PreCheck |
| 3 | 4 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. | General, premium. TSA PreCheck and Touchless ID run from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| 4 | 24 hours | General, premium |
| 5 | 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. | TSA PreCheck |
| 6 | 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. | General, premium, TSA PreCheck, Touchless ID, CLEAR+ |
If you want food near ticketing before security, Sourced Market is by Door 25 on Level 5. It lists daily hours of 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Neighborhood Cafe is also before security and lists daily hours of 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. 7-Eleven by Baggage Claim 15 on Level 3 is before security and open 24 hours.
Get to your concourse after security
SEA has one Main Terminal and six concourses. You can walk between A, B, C and D after security. N and S are satellite concourses reached by the SEA Underground train. For N, follow signs for the Green Line from C or D. For S, use the Blue Line from A or B. The Yellow Line connects A and D stations if you need to change between train loops. A train arrives every three minutes on the Blue and Green loops, but you’ll still need to reach the station and walk to your gate.
For food after security, Starbucks on A is by Gate A3 and lists daily hours of 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. Qdoba is by Gate B1 and lists 24-hour service. Starbucks in the Central Terminal is also after security and lists 24-hour service.
Getting to SEA early or in a rush
If your check-in cutoff is close, ask your airline whether it can still take your bag. With a boarding pass and no bag, Checkpoint 4 is open 24 hours.
Drive-up spaces are in General Parking on garage Floors 1–3 and 5–8. Reserved Parking is on Floor 4, and you book it at least six hours before entry. If someone is dropping you off during the morning drive rush, the Port suggests the lower Arrivals drive, followed by an escalator to ticketing.
For an early flight, check whether Link light rail reaches SeaTac/Airport Station before your target arrival time. Use the inbound schedule for your starting station.
Before the first train, King County Metro route 124 serves the airport at about 1 to 5 a.m. It stops on the airport access road where it meets International Boulevard, south of the terminal. Sound Transit route 597 is the night bus between downtown Seattle and Lakewood, about every 30 minutes. It stops at International Boulevard and South 176th Street by SeaTac/Airport Station: Bay 2 toward downtown, Bay 1 toward Lakewood.
From the station, take the walkway through garage Level 4 to the terminal, about 379 steps to the main terminal. The walkway stays open 24 hours. The Port says the pedestrian bridge to International Boulevard is open around the clock, and the elevator and stairs on the west side of the station reach street level on International Boulevard. The free Train-to-Plane cart runs between the station and garage Level 4 by Skybridges 5 and 6, daily from 5 a.m. to midnight, with baggage storage on the back. If you reach the station before 5 a.m., you won’t have the cart and will walk through the garage.
