An Eight-Hour Layover at SEA: Going Into Seattle by Link, Hour by Hour

The adult Link fare is $3 each way, and the ride to Westlake takes 39 minutes. Plan the return train, security and bags before leaving SEA.

Yes, an eight-hour layover can give you time downtown. Take Link light rail to Westlake, spend your time in one part of the city, and set your return train before you leave SEA. Sound Transit’s timetable puts the ride to Westlake at 39 minutes. You still need time to get off the plane, reach the station, come back, and clear security again.

What the window holds

If your inbound flight is late, you need to reclaim and recheck bags, or you arrive from abroad, the city portion shrinks fast. Count the eight hours as the time between flights. The walk to the station, the train wait and the walk from the downtown stop all come out of it.

Decide at SEA, with your onward flight in view

Confirm whether your airline has checked your bag through, and whether you already have the next boarding pass. On separate tickets, ask the onward airline when it will accept your bag for the next flight. The Port of Seattle says rebooking policies vary by airline.

For an international arrival that does not come from a U.S. preclearance airport, the Port of Seattle says you must claim your checked luggage and clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection, even if you’re connecting. Processing can take 60 minutes or longer at busy times. After customs, you can recheck a connecting bag with your airline or exit to Seattle. If you’re going downtown, exit after customs. Don’t use the International Arrivals Facility transfer checkpoint first: it screens connecting passengers into Concourse A, and you would have to leave security again. The transfer checkpoint runs from 6 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. Some airlines instead require you to take the bag to the ticketing level before security. See our connection guide if that is your route, and make the leave-or-stay decision after you have cleared arrivals.

SEA’s security lines peak before 9 a.m., from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 9 to 11 p.m. SEA security wait times and checkpoints shows how they build around the hour you plan to return.

Set the return train before the outbound train

Work backward from your departure, not from the time you reach downtown. For a flight leaving at 6 p.m., aim to stand back in SEA’s terminal by 4 p.m. for a domestic flight, or 3 p.m. for an international one. As a cautious planning choice, be at Westlake for the return train by 2:30 p.m. domestic or 1:30 p.m. international. That allows about 90 minutes for a train, its wait, the airport walk, and a bag pickup if needed.

Say you land at 10 a.m. for a 6 p.m. domestic departure. Use the first hour to get off the plane, settle your bag and reach SeaTac/Airport Station. If you board around 11 a.m., the 39-minute ride puts you at Westlake before noon, depending on the train wait. Stay near Westlake for lunch. Be back at Westlake by 2:30 p.m. A late arrival or a long bag line takes time out of the city visit.

Move that deadline forward if the next flight boards early, your bag must be checked again, you move slowly, or the trains show a delay. If you can’t name a comfortable return time before you leave, stay at SEA.

Decide what to do with your bags

The airport’s public storage option is Smarte Carte Baggage Storage on the baggage claim level, between Carousels 9 and 10. Its listed hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with closures from 11:30 a.m. to noon and 6 to 6:30 p.m. The Port says storage is first come, first served, with no reservations. Staff ask for ID, and every stored item is hand-searched. Call Smarte Carte at (206) 248-3645 about space and pickup before you commit to downtown. Build the return pickup into your train deadline, especially near a closure or the 10 p.m. finish.

Smarte Carte lists bags at $20 under 22 inches, $25 for 23 to 27 inches, $30 for 28 to 30 inches, $35 for 31 to 33 inches, and $40 over 34 inches. The price list does not say whether charges are per day or per stay, so confirm your total before handing anything over. See our bag storage guide. To avoid carrying a checked bag yourself on a domestic trip, the Port lists two porting services: Express Bag Services at 206-661-3560 and Axel Baggage Service LLC at 206-631-1323.

If the desk is closed, full, or too slow for your return plan, keeping your bag with you or staying at the airport may be the better call. The free Train-to-Plane cart has baggage storage on the back and runs between the Link station and garage.

Go from baggage claim to Westlake

From baggage claim, look for Carousel 16. Go up one floor, cross Skybridge 6, then turn left through the parking garage to SeaTac/Airport Station.

The Train-to-Plane cart runs between garage Level 4 near Skybridges 5 and 6 and the station from 5 a.m. to midnight daily. The Port says it is free and available to all.

Board Link toward downtown. Symphony is 37 minutes from SEA. The adult fare, for ages 19 to 64, is $3 each way, or $6 round trip. ORCA LIFT and senior or disabled fares are $1 each way, or $2 round trip. Youth 18 and under ride free. A day pass costs twice the one-way fare and is valid only on the date purchased, so at $6 it costs the same as two single fares and saves nothing on a downtown day. Tap a credit or debit card or an ORCA card, or buy a ticket at the machine or in the Transit GO Ticket app. Our Link page explains payment and the station route.

Allow time for a train wait as well as the station walk. Trains leave SEA at these intervals:

When Wait between trains
Weekdays, 4:51 a.m. to 7:53 p.m. 8 to 10 minutes
Weekdays, 7:53 to 9:05 p.m. 12 minutes
Weekdays, 9:05 to 11:45 p.m. 16 minutes
Weekends, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. About 10 minutes
Weekends, 9 to 11 p.m. About 12 minutes
Weekends, after 11 p.m. About 16 minutes
Day First train from SEA Last train from SEA
Monday through Friday 4:51 a.m. 12:05 a.m.
Saturday 4:48 a.m. 12:06 a.m.
Sunday 5:58 a.m. 11:18 p.m.

These are SEA departures, so they do not tell you when the last train leaves downtown. Work out the ride back with the Link light rail guide.

Where to spend the hours

Ride to Symphony or Westlake, then walk to Pike Place Market, as our Pike Place Market guide lays out. Set one phone reminder for your return departure and another to start walking back to Westlake.

Back at SEA

At Westlake, board a Link train toward SeaTac/Airport Station. Follow the garage walkway back to the terminal, and collect a stored bag if you have one. All main security checkpoints reach every gate. Checkpoint 4, nearest the Central Terminal, B and C, is open 24 hours, which helps on a late return. Our security page lists the other checkpoints with their hours and lanes. After screening, take the SEA Underground Blue Line to S or the Green Line to N. A, B, C and D are connected on foot.

If you stay at SEA instead, Neighborhood Cafe is a restaurant open daily from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., and 7-Eleven by Bag Claim 15 is open 24 hours with toiletries. Both are before security, so you can wait with your bag without entering a checkpoint.
