The USO and military travel at SEA
The SEA USO Center is above Checkpoint 4, open 7 days (8 a.m. to midnight or 4 a.m.), free for traveling military and families. Hours, AMC check-in, PreCheck.

Traveling military members and their families can use the USO Center free, every day of the week. It’s on the mezzanine above Checkpoint 4, before security. It stays open until 4 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights and closes earlier the rest of the week.
When the USO is open
| Day | Open |
|---|---|
| Sunday | 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| Monday, Wednesday, Saturday | 8 a.m. to 4 a.m. the next day |
| Tuesday, Thursday, Friday | 8 a.m. to midnight |
The Port of Seattle publishes these hours, and our military lounge listing repeats them. Call the center at (206) 246-1908 before you count on a middle-of-the-night stop. One volunteer told KOMO News that a family member landed at 2 a.m. and found the center closed because too few volunteers were on shift. That was one night, but it’s a reason to treat the posted hours as a plan. The Port’s blog says the center was once open around the clock and cut its hours when fewer volunteers, especially for nights, were available. The 4 a.m. closing matches the nights the AMC charter flies to Japan and Korea, which the Port gives as Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
What’s inside and how to find it
A Team McChord video for people on a permanent change of station says the center sits above the Southwest Airlines ticket counter. Checkpoint 4 is the one checkpoint open 24 hours, and our security page lists the hours of the rest. Since the USO is outside the secure area, you can stop in first and walk down to screening afterward.
The Port lists these services, all free to military members and their families:
- snacks and beverages, plus hot dogs, sandwiches and cookies made fresh by volunteers
- luggage storage
- a bunk room and recliners for naps
- a seating lounge with four big-screen TVs, and a movie theater
- computers, a printer, a fax and free Wi-Fi
- a separate family room
- charging stations, flight time boards and a baby changing station
- showers, which the Port’s blog lists, with towels set out by volunteers
The Port’s blog puts the center at 7,500 square feet, and USO Northwest has had a location at SEA since the 1960s. The Team McChord video says pets can come in if they stay in their carrier.
Who can use it
The Port says the center serves “traveling military and their families” and stops there. It doesn’t say whether veterans can use it or what ID to show. Ask before you go, at (206) 246-1908 or on the USO Northwest site.
If you’re flying on an AMC flight
AMC Gateway flights from SEA serve bases in Japan and Korea, according to the Port. Duty passengers on travel orders check in at the last six counters on the ticketing level, next to Checkpoint 2. The Port gives the timings:
- Check-in opens 6 hours before departure.
- Duty passengers must be in line no later than 3 hours 20 minutes before departure.
- Space-A roll calls happen 3 hours before departure, at counters on the ticketing level.
The Team McChord video says check-in opens 7 hours out. The Port’s 6 hours is the airport’s figure, so plan on that and confirm with your travel office.
If you land at SEA on a commercial flight first, the video warns that your bags don’t transfer to AMC by themselves. Claim them at the carousel before you go anywhere. It puts the AMC office on the baggage claim level between carousels 4 and 5 and calls the process long, usually overnight.
Bring paper orders, since the video says AMC keeps a physical copy.
How long AMC passengers wait
The Port’s blog puts AMC layovers at up to 20 hours and says the charter seats up to 200, which often fills the center past capacity and sends people out onto the mezzanine. KOMO News reported on one group of Marines heading to Okinawa with a briefing set for 1:30 a.m. and a flight just before 9 a.m., about 15 hours after the reporter spoke with the service members.
When the USO is closed
The airport lists no sleep pods or day rooms, and the USO bunk room holds the only beds inside it. When it’s shut, the Team McChord video suggests seating in the terminal or a nearby hotel with a courtesy shuttle. Our hotels page lists places to stay near the airport.
Skipping the security line
The Port says all members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including Reserves and National Guard, can get TSA PreCheck screening on participating airlines. Service academy cadets and midshipmen are eligible too. Enter your 10-digit DoD ID number as your known traveler number when you book. It’s on the back of your common access card, and milConnect shows it under “My Profile” if the card doesn’t.
You don’t have to be in uniform. The Port says accompanying family members ages 12 and under can use expedited screening. For wounded warriors, TSA verifies status through the military branch and passes their travel details to the airport. Injured service members and veterans can call TSA Cares at (855) 787-2227, 72 hours before they travel, to ask what to expect at the checkpoint.
Luggage, if the USO isn’t an option
The USO’s luggage room is free for its guests. Everyone else can use Smarte Carte’s storage on the baggage claim level between Carousels 9 and 10. It’s open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and closes 11:30 a.m. to noon and 6 to 6:30 p.m. A bag under 22 inches costs $20 on Smarte Carte’s list, which doesn’t say whether that’s per day or per stay, so ask at the counter. Our luggage storage page has the full price list.
For help porting bags, call 206-661-3560.
Free gift wrapping before security
The Port of Seattle’s own video says USO volunteers wrap gifts for free before you go through security, since wrapped presents shouldn’t go through screening. Donations to USO Seattle are welcome there too.
